Study export includes lists and wikis but import doesn't import them Andy Straw  2012-09-07 11:25

I'm trying to use the enhanced features in 12.2 for exporting and importing a study. When exporting, I check the boxes for "Wikis and their attachments" and "Lists" (and "CRF Datasets"). The exported zip file includes these - I looked. When I import the study, only the datasets get imported, no lists, no wiki pages, and no errors. I was able to get the lists imported separately by unzipping the study zip file, and then re-zipping just the lists contents, and then using "Manage Lists" and "Import List Archive". But I don't know of any way to "import" the wiki pages. I tried to manually copy the contents of the wikis folder via WEBDav to the @wiki sub-folder of the study folder, but I got permission errors, so I assume that's not a valid way to "import" wikis.

I tried doing the export/import both via a zip file to/from my browser, and via the pipeline root as individual files, but both ways behaved the same - neither worked fully.

Is the study import feature not fully working? Am I missing something? Is there a way to "import" just the wikis portion of a study?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

A colleague showed me that I could use the wiki Copy feature to copy a folder of wiki pages within the same LabKey instance - from one study to another, in my case. This gave me a way to do the same thing as export/import the wiki portion of my study, since my new study is on the same LabKey instance.

Would still like to know if I was doing something wrong with Study Import that caused the lists and wiki pages not to import.

Thanks.

Andy,
In the last few releases of LabKey, we have added a Folder Archive and have slowly been transitioning to this type of folder export in favor of the study export archive. So, what is happening in your case is that when you go to export the study and select the wiki and lists options on the export screen, the export that you get is actually the new folder archive (which includes all of the objects that were previously included in the study archive plus things like wikis and other folder information based on your export selections). Then, when it comes time to do the import, what you will want to do is import that folder archive into the Folder Management > Import page. This will import all of the objects within the archive instead of just the study specific ones (which is what happens when you import the folder archive into the study import page). You can get to the folder management page by Admin > Folder > Management and then selecting the Import tab.

Thanks for that explanation, Cory. Importing the archive as a folder, rather than as a study, worked.

However, the instructions on the Import tab were a bit mis-leading. They say "You can import a folder archive to create and populate a new folder." I assumed that meant what it said: it would both create and populate the folder. Actually, it just populates an existing folder - you have to create the new folder yourself first, then use import to populate it. The first time I tried to use the feature, I didn't know that, and I selected the PARENT of the folder I wanted to create/import, then did the import, and it imported into the PARENT folder - did not create a new folder.

After I understood how this worked, I was able to import the folder as desired.

Agree it's misleading. Our plan is to do away with the study import page and fix up the folder import instructions in 12.3. Thanks for the feedback...

Thanks,

Adam,

Can the folder export/import also include a customized Participant view screen? I was able to export a study from our production instance and import as a folder (not study) in a dev environment. I get everything (wikis, datasets, visit schedule, webparts, lists), but I had customized the Participant view and that did not get imported.

Thanks,

Anthony

This is not supported today, but I would suggest putting the custom participant view in a file-based module (named views/participant.html) anyway. That way it is easier to write, test, and deploy on multiple servers (test/stating/production).

Matt,

Great suggestion, good to know that can be done.

Does this mean any 'views' can be added to a container by just creating a file based module and adding to the views directory?

Thanks,

Anthony

Yes, you just have to enable the module for that folder.
